Jefferson Township Woman Dies in 3-Car Crash on I-81
Benton Township, Pennsylvania (January 22, 2018) – Officials have identified one person who was killed in a 3-vehicle collision Monday morning in on Interstate 81 South in Benton Township, as Dr. Patricia Pasierb, of Jefferson Township, according to a news release from Pennsylvania State Police.
The deadly collision took place at around 7:41 a.m. Monday, January 22, on I-81 mile marker 205, at the Lackawanna and Susquehanna county line in Benton Township.According to troopers, Jacob Bennett of Rathway, New Jersey, was driving a 2011 Volkswagen Jetta northbound in the left lane when he entered the northbound passing lane and hit a 2013 Subaru Crosstrek driven by Rebecca Giordano of Jefferson Township, on the driver’s side.
The impact caused both cars to drive in counterclockwise into the grass median. The Jetta came to rest facing north in the median, while the Subaru kept going west into the southbound lanes of I-81 and hit a southbound 2003 Ford Escape operated by Nicole Onofrey of Uniondale in Pennsylvania.
Dr. Pasierb, the Director of Special Services at Mountain View School District in Susquehanna County, was a passenger in Giordano’s vehicle, a special education teacher in the school district. Pasierb was pronounced dead at the scene, troopers said.
The drivers of the Subaru and the Ford were taken to a hospital for treatment while the driver of the Jetta and a passenger suffered minor injuries but were not taken to a hospital.
